We are not a government agency

DMV Fee Calculator is an independent website. We are not the DMV, DOT, MVD, RMV, or BMV of any state, we are not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them, and we have no access to your vehicle record, your title history, or any account you may have with your state's motor vehicle agency. If you need something official — a payoff amount, a renewal notice, confirmation that a title was processed — that has to come from your state's own DMV, not from us.

Estimates, not exact figures

The numbers this calculator produces are based on published state fee schedules that we've researched and entered by hand. We do our best to keep them current, but a few things can make your actual bill different from what you see here:

• Counties, parishes, and boroughs often add local, transit, or emissions fees that aren't published in a statewide schedule.
• States change their fee amounts, sometimes with little advance notice, and there can be a gap between a rate change and when we catch it and update the site.
• Outstanding tickets, unpaid tolls, or prior-year penalties on your specific record will show up on your DMV bill and have no way of showing up in a general calculator.
• Specialty plates, personalized plates, dealer document fees, and lien fees are not modeled in our numbers at all — see the "what's not included" note on the homepage.
• Late fees and penalty structures, especially in states like California where penalties stack rather than being a flat add-on, are estimated using the general formula the state publishes, not your specific expiration date and payment history.

Because of all that, treat the total this calculator gives you as a planning number — good enough to budget with, good enough to decide whether you can afford a car before you buy it — not as the figure you should hand over at the counter expecting an exact match.
